Gävleborg County
Gävleborg, with a population of 276,000, has a tradition of timber production, forestry and agriculture. The northern part of the county also has a strong cultural heritage and a thriving tourism trade, while the south is home to actors in the iron and steel industry and the trade and shipping sector. Sandvik, Ovako Steel, Stora Enso, Korsnäs, Modo and Ericsson are just some of the local economy´s prominent businesses. Many companies are IT-based: these include call centres and production processes that depend on geographical information systems (GIS) and IT.
The region focuses on developing the infrastructure required for healthy industry and training, among other activities. Gävle University has some 12,500 full-time students, and a particularly solid reputation in civil engineering and urban management. Gävleborg County gears its activities towards achieving sustainable economic development and more jobs, among other things by strengthening existing growth industries, promoting tourism, creating an attractive living environment and fostering IT.
