Dalarna County
 Dalarna, which has a population of 276,000, is a nexus of tradition and innovation. The landscape is characterised by forests, mountains and lakes, which served as the basis for the county´s traditional industries: pulp, paper, iron and steel. The major companies based here include SSAB, Avesta Polarit, StoraEnso, ABB and Scania.
Dalarna is making a concerted effort to raise its national and European profile in a bid to make the region more attractive for immigration, enterprise and investment. The domains in which Dalarna aims to boost its competitiveness and create new jobs include steel production, the timber industry, housing construction, electric power transmission, graphics and the media and also tourism. Universities, businesses and public authorities are working closely together to encourage more diversified, knowledge-based enterprise, whereby business strategies should include long-term investment in research and development (R&D).
